Self Portrait
-Shepard Fairey influence
Permanent marker, Digital
2010
I concentrated on the red-brown color scheme and the red-green color contrast of Shepard Fairey, rather than the blue-white, because those are the colors I tend to gravitate towards. I'm also influenced by the season fall, in which I was born. I studied the different elements of Fairey's works and tried to interpret them in my own style.
First I knew I had to find a pattern to layer in multiple ways. I searched for a gothic style pattern because the architecture and contemporary culture are both areas of my interest. Then I also wanted to incorporate text into my piece, so I found some japanese lettering and layered it as well. This is because my first desire to become and artist came from a Japanese anime influence.
Also, I decided to incorporate the sunburst that Fairey often uses, because my artwork is often influenced by the sun and radiant light. I dulled the burst down, because I did not want it to over empower the entire picture. Then among my search for patterns, I found a simple and delicate floral pattern that I used slightly on my cheek as a beauty mark to suggest my feminine side. Also included, as sometimes seen in Fairey's work, are cracks. This describes that my life is not perfect and I'm only human just like everyone else. As a last touch, I added a hint of paw prints. This represents my love of animals, particularly, lions.
Overall, I feel that I was able to successfully represent myself in the style of Shepard Faiery and still contain my unique personality.
